This is a dense herbaceous evergreen houseplant with a spreading, ground-hugging habit of growth. Its wonderfully bold, texture is quite ornamental and should be used to full effect. This plant should not require much pruning, except when necessary to keep it looking its best.
Care
Planting & Growing
This plant is native to the tropics and prefers growing in moist environments with evenly warm conditions all year round. In our climate, it is usually grown as an houseplant in a basket or container. In its preferred tropical habitat, it can grow to be around 8 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 4 feet.
This plant does best in partial shade to shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is a good plant for helping purify the air indoors. This particular variety is a native to the tropics, and parts of it are known to be toxic to humans and animals, so care should be exercised in planting it around children and pets.
Heartleaf Philodendron is a fine choice for baskets, but it is also a good selection for planting in containers. Because of its trailing habit of growth, it is ideally suited for use as a 'spiller' in the 'spiller-thriller-filler' container combination; plant it near the edges where it can spill gracefully over the pot. It grows best if planted in a good quality potting soil that drains well but still retains moisture. Fertilize with a good quality houseplant food spring through fall. While requiring very little pruning, it will benefit from occasional pruning to keep the center of the plant full.
